Visit Oamaru Brand, Waitaki Development Board, Oamaru, NZ.
The unique coastal city of Oamaru, required a unique tourism identity which captured the region’s pre-European and Victorian era heritage, as well as expressing the area’s dynamic directions in today’s world. The resulting brand identity features the motivational call to “visit” – arranged dynamically but treated in a style which recalls a visit to a favorite old relative. Custom typography of the word “Oamaru” is based on the scalloped carvings of the cities many unique stone pillars.
www.visitoamaru.co.nz is the major access point for all information related to the region, as gathered by the representative professional tourism body. The site’s style is initially reflective of the wide-open and unhurried feeling of the area, while the site’s navigation is designed to facilitate self paced, simple digestion of considerable facts and directions. Where possible we have let the region’s beautiful imagery speak for itself.
Not all prospective consumers of our clients product, will base their decisions on website information. For that reason, we devised a large format print piece, which encapsulates all the intrigue and beauty of the Oamaru brand, but uses the personality of a friendly and professional personal “guide” to share detailed information regarding a large geographic area. Ideally, the fold out DL brochure becomes an indispensable A2 “map” for a visitors memorable road-trip experience. Signage guides and informs. Communications develop awareness.
Creative design, production knowledge and delivery for a suite of marketing products for the University of Otago Undergraduate Publications.
To Whom It May Concern
This reference for Flying Lizard is based on a 12-month relationship with the agency, which won the contract to work on our substantial group of undergraduate publications.
Flying Lizard has worked closely with us over this period in developing new material as well as ensuring the existing brand standards and guidelines were followed. It was a challenging task and the end result is one we are well pleased with. Within the guidelines, they were able to roll out some new design ideas, which have been incorporated in other work.
The University is a large organization, and the resulting inevitable bureaucracy always makes this kind of work a challenge. The strong client-service focus that Flying Lizard has ensured that despite the delays encountered at our end, the work was always delivered on time with minimum disruption.
Billing was always clearly outlined and where there were changes in estimated work, we always knew in advance what to expect. Equally, where there were any problems we were always aware and kept in touch with how things were being handled.
I am happy to follow up with a conversation if you so desire.

Ever asked the question and never really got a good answer about logo, ID system and brand?
A logo design
Is best described as a strong black and white graphic to represent your company. By describing the logo in one color, you are assured that your business’s representation will be strong even when used in single color applications such as on clothing, embossing, black and white ads and when photocopying. Colour can then be added to highlight and to give emotion to your customer for recognition.
A corporate identity or ID system
Is a defined system of graphic elements that represents your company. This includes choosing ‘corporate colors’ and or ‘typeface/s (fonts)’ and applying them to your logo, selecting paper, photographic imagery, sounds ie music and creating layouts for your company stationery as well as developing graphic standards for products, packaging and signage. It can also include developing the look of sales kits, media advertising, promotions and even office decor.
Is the whole, it is the describing word for all of the above. It allows your business to be remembered and recalled by a customer so they may buy from you and not another business.
How much do they costs?
There are many variables to consider, but the average cost for creating a logo for a start up business can start at $400. Factors that influence the cost are: usage (city-wide versus global), conceptual difficulty (abstract concepts or large, diversified companies versus single product company), the number of individuals involved in the decision making process thru to the sheer number of ideas required to make that final decision. Before any work is started, you will receive a cost for budgeting.
Corporate ID System
New businesses can expect a starting figure of $800 for a logo with a simple ID system which outlines choosing company colors, maybe typeface considerations applying them to logo usage. A suggestion of the logo in use will be produced ie sample letterhead, maybe visual of logo as a sign. Prices for these other elements are generally the next step as the final artwork files needed by suppliers to reproduce from are unique and will be specified upon your further needs.
A brand is what you end up with, a full and complete set of tools you use to marketing your business to your customers. A brand will include the stationery, building and vehicle signage, maybe radio ads, maybe an animated character to give recognition in the customers mind. A brand does extend further beyond these, large corporations and businesses will use recollection for the mind, techniques which help establish the business to the customer – unseen, unheard but all part of a brand.
Do I really need a pro?
If you’re thinking, “My friend’s son is into art… he’d probably come up with something for only a few hundred dollars” or “we could have a competition for the employees to come up with a new logo,” you are sabotaging your business.
You can easily appreciate how much your office environment and your own personal appearance influence a client when meeting with them. Your logo and corporate image provide the same function, not only in your office, but in remote situations as well. Realistically, think of what you pay for producing the right image for your company month after month – office space, receptionist, advertising, business suits, presentations, lunches, etc.
A corporate identity is a one-time expense that will reap benefits for many, many years. You need to consider it one of the most important investments you will make for your company, period, it has to be thought this way. You wouldn’t apply the same principal to building your own house and expect it to remain standing or return on your investment.
In addition to providing a first impression of your business and providing a recognizable look to ads and products, your logo will be advertising for your business all the time. Everyplace it exists, people will see it – from people driving past your building and seeing the signage to the customer who picks up your product after purchasing it from another and wishing to find your business to order a new one. Your logo and identity are always working for you.
To be effective, a corporate identity must adhere to certain standards for image and status for your profession – from the office to the printed page. The consistency of your company’s image makes it easier for consumers to become familiar with your company and recognize its products. Surveys have shown that corporate image materials such as letterhead, envelopes, and business cards are more important to conveying a company’s prestige than how long your company has been in business, the location of your headquarters, charitable activities, or the number of employees. Only a company’s product or service conveys more prestige.
Since corporate image materials carry much of the responsibility of marketing a company to its customers, it is clearly a job for professionals.
What will I receive?
Your company will become the focus of experienced, trained and talented professionals working to provide you with a creative visual solution. Professional results aside… you get guaranteed satisfaction. Flying Lizards’ service tries to meet the expectations in your mind with practical business reality ie budget. Our products are based on creating a minimum of three ideas for logo’s or other collateral. These ‘designs’ are to be chosen from. For a corporate identity system – creating a brand, (selecting colors, colorizing logo, visualizing signage, product packaging and creating stationary) you will receive minimum of 3 ideas or more for each piece.
Most clients (95%) choose one of the presented designs with little or no variation – with good brainstorming between ourselves we can almost have a suitable idea in our heads with 2 possible ideas to weigh the suitable idea up against. In the event that no designs meet your approval, a limited second round of designs can be produced at a cost of $100/hr. Please realise it is not the produced graphic that costs it is the creative person’s employed time and the years of study that you are purchasing.
Upon payment, your final design will be supplied in various industry standard formats that can be used immediately and if there is a special file format that is needed by a supplier to reproduce the logo from we will save this artwork file and deliver to you.
Logos will be sent to you as download links first, if needed they can be saved to USB flash drives or CD/DVD storage options. The files will be in EPS format and JPG format along with others at your request. Any designs for print pieces will be saved as high resolution PDF files for your printer to their output specifications. Web files will be saved as JPG or GIF predominately and other files to suit at the required time.
What happens if I don’t like the designs? – For your assurance
The cost for any work is for the stated number of concepts and then one final logo artwork file listed on each product we offer. If you request further concept ideas these can be done and will be based on additional part hourly rate charges in 15 min units. What if you don’t like the concepts? We believe after 25 years of skill and knowledge we can hit the mark every time. But if you can not choose, time done and any materials used on the concepts will be deducted from the cost and a refund of any pre-payment will be made.
The designs shown for various businesses on our website are for reference only and are just a few of the many designs done, they do not depict what you will get as all designs have the same technical skill applied. The cost levels are only controlled by the number of concepts and amount of digital files you wish to order. You are only entitled to the final selected and paid for design.
How long will it take?
The time for completion is based on a fixed price model and therefore a set amount of time is applied per product we create. For a bronze logo design, start to finish, you could allow approximately 4 hours, but realistically for you to have time to digest and think, a good working week should be allowed. A corporate image system will take longer and will vary based on the items we are asked to create, but these are set and therefore we can deliver to a time – again allow time to digest and test, generally time is used up when you cant get to review a proof straight away, a good 4 weeks is an ideal time to iron out any needs or wants for a great business brand.
Email us using our contact page form (it is easier) just say you are looking for a business brand – easy, we will call you and arrange a coffee.
We have also created an outline document on Business Promotion and branded marketing tools to give you key points to think about and a checklist for you to compile your branded marketing materials that are needed.

Travel Headfirst, Otago, NZ. A brand to head stand on.
Our objective was to focus on imagery the customer has to draw the viewer in, but to also provide enough information so that that they were fully informed with a good marketing twist to help get the message to the customer – something you could ‘play on’.
A clean black and white logo was designed, able to be placed on almost any image, colour or visual and still be strongly seen.
A CMS website was activated with branding applied so Travel Headfirst could maintain and manage along with their booking online tour operator booking system.
Print collateral templates were created for in house use by Travel Headfirst staff. These were – adverts for press and other media like magazines thru to local flyers, tourist rack cards for information centers, DL colour product brochures for the end user, posters and banners, vehicle signage system.
As Travel Headfirst has developed and grown. More exciting products have been added and with this came the need for product brands to identify them individually as needed. Design style was taken from the business logo and applied to each product.
Hopper – providing a Hop on and Hop off Dunedin City tour and needed a logo to go alongside the advertising. They wanted the logo to show some sort of motion and to also incorporate a jaffa image to reflect a local tour.
Nude Rugby – an offshoot that gained quick momentum. Quick business skills allowed Travel Headfirst to use this tour to expand into an alternate market.
Travel Headfirst requested marketing collateral that they could use and develop. The business has ‘many years under the belt’ and Flying Lizard is proud to have been ready to help as needed.
Rainbow Confectionery/Innovex Group Limited, Oamaru, NZ.
Efficient and cost minded packaging brand design.
Rainbow Confectionery Ltd. is a New Zealand owned & operated company based in Oamaru and specialising in the manufacture of confectionery, including: gums and jellies, marshmallows, chocolate products. Supplying customers in the route & retail trades for both local and export markets. Their products are smart yet iconic, and their ideas are packed into good packaging examples.
Flying Lizard was asked to work on Rainbow Confectionery product packaging as they needed something to set there product apart from the other similar offerings in this highly competitive standard confectionery market which they could then build upon with an in house marketing department.
We were initially called in to provide simple illustrative images to liven up product packaging, Flying Lizard was then asked to design and supply packaging design for seasonal product ranges for the entire year.
There were various ways that using Flying Lizard benefited the marketing needs.
With a large product range, it was important to use the correct logo and standard product information in terms of branding, product awareness, unit cost and packaging reproduction cost. Our design team proposed a shortlist of creative ideas and provided design information for each option that optimised the Rainbow Confectionery brand to illuminate the product to the required level. The customers final adjustments provided finished designs to able completion of packaging mockups to work in with the sales teams objectives, while using only the budgeted amount originally proposed for the project.
In addition to the functional packaging designs, Flying Lizard provided the overall creative for the rest of the company’s brand, with an eye on time and costs. Rainbow Confectionery’s logo was used were possible to it’s advantages while keeping low reproductions costs to extended the budget.
In certain cases where the correct brand placement was not available because of visual size constraints, we were able to work out a solution that would meet the requirements of brand placement, product packaging effect and budgetary constraints with printing plate colours.
Within a season of the updated packaging design, our customer had received positive feedback on the marketing of there product, with competition companies now using similar design layouts that we achieved, this particular packaging work was far more effective in raising Rainbow Confectionery’s product in the market.
From 2013 Rainbow Confectionery is placed for strong business growth. The client has implimented their internal marketing and communications department and is underway with a very robust and active marketing drive. Flying Lizard wish Rainbow Confectionery well and look forward to seeing this business still around in many years to come.
This portfolio demonstrates how professional brand design, can give a business a competitive edge and who better to provide that design and marketing knowledge than Flying Lizard, who give business momentum.
Tonic, Otago, NZ.
Reference from business owner
The owners of tonic, a craft beer bar needed a simple marketing plan that would grow custom, build turn over and show that there is more to going out than swilling DB or Lion Nation branded beer. The movement to craft beer was growing when Flying Lizard was approach and New Zealand has great craft and micro breweries up and down the country.
The Flying Lizard set about building a marketing plan, keeping it simple and implementing basic collateral and advertising for the financial year. After 12 months we were able to grow the businesses turn over 25%.
With the GFC/economic recession, a controlled approach was taken to target this figure again or if possible a bit more. The Flying Lizard’s marketing plan is working well, the financial year and the figures are healthy – considering the tightening of customers having ‘a few spare dollars’.
The marketing plan is well one its way for the business owners future needs, of growth and then sale for their own interests.
Highlight promotion – An annual fantastic 2 week beer festival – called bestival of feer, where the bar show cased 24 award winning craft beers from the recent New Zealand Beervana of the year.
Major elements of tonic bar‚ marketing and supplied collateral design include:
Standardized templates for quick turn around posters and promotional items.
Launch into social media – its a bar, it should be a key social player and use new social technologies.
Beer festival with latest music styles.
Here at Flying Lizard, we like helping all sorts of businesses, it is not hard to market your self or your business, just plan it.

“To Whom It May Concern:
In 2008 we approached Dayne Smith of The Flying Lizard to assist us in marketing tonic. At this point we met to decide a marketing strategy and assign a budget for the next 12 months. We worked closely with Dayne and his team creating the marketing collateral needed for the strategy, including an annual, monthly and weekly event idea and collateral to promote and advertise this. Tools to measure the strategy were put in place along with periodic reviews to gauge turnover which allowed for business planning and growth.
Throughout the year we used The Flying Lizard’s ‘goo™’ product (marketing strategy tools) which was extremely useful in communicating and coordinating the marketing collateral. We found it particularly useful as it allowed us to post messages and jobs outside of normal office hours. Flying Lizard’s team was responsible for producing the marketing collateral and website updates for us and we found the team to be very efficient and able to turn around jobs on often tight deadlines.
The marketing strategy helped us achieve a 25% increase in turnover for the 12 month period and we have continued to employ the services of The Flying Lizard to promote our business. It is satisfying to work on the business with a strategy in place and with the knowledge of how our business fluctuates over a 12 month period.
Please do not hesitate to contact me email@example.com in person should you wish to discuss the services of The Flying Lizard further.
